Why Do Shops Sell Christmas Stuff So Early?

Every year, it seems like Christmas comes round earlier, and that’s because marketing efforts often appear in shop displays well before Halloween and Bonfire Night have been successfully navigated.
This can of course frustrate many, simply because cheesy Christmas songs and opulent decorations are permanent fixtures in our daily lives for so long, but from a retail perspective, but there are actually a number of justifiable reasons to proclaim the start of Christmas, even if the big day itself looms weeks away.
So, before you get all Ebenezer Scrooge on shops for bringing out their Xmas exploits, have a read through just some of the many reasons they get things going so early.
Christmas is More Than Just One Day
Try and think of Christmas as being more than one day, but rather a season of celebration. In fact, the lead up to Christmas day is possibly bigger than the showpiece event itself, with tons of traditions often observed across the country.
We have towns and cities welcoming droves of residents to see the high street lights switched on, nativity shows at primary schools and the race to get Christmas number one in the charts.

With so much Christmassy wonder taking place over so many weeks, it’s only natural for retailers to harness this whilst the festivities are underway.
Significant Profits
The most obvious reason would be how certain sectors make a vast majority of their yearly profits during this period of the year.
For context, last year, it was forecasted that Brits would spend over £84 billion on Christmas, and such a seismic sum is largely handed to select industries, such as confectionery, toys, electronics, clothing and hospitality, all of which bring this season to life.
Lavish Displays Take Time
Christmas is all about excess, so the demand for certain items will be much higher. During this period, around 250 million roast potatoes are consumed, upwards to £2.4 billion is spent on clothing, and of course, getting hold of the most popular presents is a challenge for many, like the PlayStation 5, which has now hit over £18 million sales.

With such amplified demands, it’s clear retailers need to plan well in advance to position themselves ahead of key competitors, and also take full advantage of people who like to secure items well ahead of the big day.
It’s Christmas For Goodness Sake!
What does Christmas represent? Well, it symbolises joy, colour, festivity and being together, so pretty good stuff for retailers who need to capture positivity within their branding and subsequent marketing efforts to get the best results.

And, can you imagine how boring and pretty depressing the winter would be without the raucous nature of Christmas? See this as the escapism from cooler temperatures and shorter days, helping guide you towards the more upbeat vibes you get from the summer months.
